A Meticulously Designed Bamboo Lodge

Shishe Zhuli Hall Hotel

Protective Spaces

Bamboo offers some fascinating properties, a reason it has been in architecture for thousands of years, especially in Asia. The Interior design of the Bamboo Lodge in the Shishe Zhuli in Yibin City, China, uses bamboo to present a spatial concept that creates a world of its own.

Following a holistic approach that expands the possibilities of this natural material, the design deliberately pushes the boundaries of conventional ideas. The starting point of this design was that familiar concepts only assign a limited role to the materials used and that, by adopting an overly formalistic approach, too strict a distinction is made between elements such as floors, walls and ceilings, with the aim of thus creating an intentional “order”. Instead, this interior design rather wants to realise the vision of an open, protective and soft-seeming “skin” made of bamboo and thus make it acquire the same functions that skin has for every living being. The actual “space” is expressed through the different textures of bamboo. The interior of the Bamboo Lodge features bamboo strips and bamboo panelling which, like building blocks, form the unique “skin” of each space. The top part of the corridor, in turn, is constructed with original bamboo, creating an impression as if walking through the time tunnel of a bamboo forest. This interior design is thus also a journey through time, inviting guests into a natural-looking primeval bamboo grove.
